Monty Gorman: From 3.94 GPA to Rising Rap Star—A New Voice of Versatility and Vision

In a world that constantly urges artists to “pick a lane,” Monty Gorman is taking the scenic route—rapping, producing, and creating from the heart with no limits in sight. The California-based rapper and producer, born Kai Herrera, is a recent Cal Poly Pomona graduate with a 3.94 GPA. But rather than pursue a traditional career path, he’s doubling down on his true passion: music.

What he has to prove

“I feel like I have something to prove to myself,” Monty says. “A lot of people are told they can be whatever they want, but very few actually chase it with everything they’ve got. I want to be one of the few who really go for it.”

The Making of Monty Gorman

Monty Gorman’s musical journey began like many others—freestyling and recording rough cuts with friends in college. “Most of the songs were trash,” he jokes, “but we kept going. Now I’ve made over 100 tracks, and each one gets better.”

Monty isn’t just a rapper. He’s a one-man powerhouse, producing, writing, and recording his music entirely on his own unless collaborating with another producer. His creative hunger is matched by his willingness to learn, and that attitude has fueled a fast-rising momentum since his debut earlier this year.

His latest single, “Who You?”, released on May 20, showcases his lyrical confidence and evolving sound. With plans to release at least one song every month, Monty is building a catalog that reflects both range and reliability—two qualities that set him apart in the noise of today’s music scene.

Overcoming the Grind

What makes Monty Gorman’s rise so compelling is how self-made it truly is. With no formal background in production or engineering, he taught himself everything from scratch. That learning curve—steep and often lonely—has become one of his greatest strengths.

“My ability to learn is what’s carried me through everything,” he says. “The hardest part so far has been getting genuine publicity. But once that comes, I truly believe my work ethic and skills can take me anywhere.”

Eyes on the Future, Feet in the Present

Monty isn’t obsessed with fame or forecasts. For now, his only mission is growth. “I just want to learn. I want to expand my skillset and become someone who can contribute to music in a meaningful way,” he says. “If I can make this into a sustainable career—keep creating, keep improving—I’ll be living the dream.”

His long-term vision includes collaborations, continued genre exploration, and making music that means something—to himself and to the people who find it.
